Photo Album (1997-1998)

My trip to San Francisco was my first major solo trip. It was wonderfully refreshing to discover a place all on my own and to choose for myself exactly what it was that I wanted to see. Some of the photos are from later in my trip when I hooked up with the Mikes, and they showed me some of their favorite spots.

Alcatraz (Alcatraz was a really amazing place to visit. I was totally unaware of its rich history not to mention its beauty, so I've included a link here to the Alcatraz website for those whose interest is peaked by the photos below.)

There's nothing special about this shot except that it was a picturesque shot to begin my visit to Alcatraz with.
A lookout tower on the road from the ferry launch to the prison.
A view from a guard house window.
I was really impressed with how lush everything was on Alcatraz. It was such a contrast to the inside of the prison itself.
View of the prison from the excercise yard. I've noticed lately that a lot of the movies about Alcatraz like shooting scenes here.
These are the ruins of the houses that the wardens and their families lived in on the island. Many of the flowers that were in their gardens have grown wild all over the island.
The head honcho, el supremo warden's house was burned down during the Aboriginal occupation of the island which occured after the prison had gone into disuse.
You can see the lighthouse (which was on the island before the prison) and the barracks where the guards lived in this photo.
Returning from the island of Alcatraz to the harbour.

You can really see how much of a decent there really is on those San Francisco hills.
This is a picture of the Christian Science church that I attended while I was there. It was very lovely inside and matched the general colour scheme that seems to have been chosen for San Francisco.

Golden Gate Bridge

I think everyone who visits San Francisco has a generic postard picture of the Golden Gate Bridge. Here's mine.
You may not be able to see it in the thumbnail, but there were people surfing in the Bay just below the bridge... in February! I was wearing a jacket, and these people were in the water in their wet suits.
Just looking at those postard pictures, I never realized just how big the cables on the bridge really are.
